Main Location:
Inhabits southern Mozambique, south of the Save river, across the Gaza plains, the Inhambane coastal area, and along the Maputo river and to the South African border.
Origin:
The Nguni group of cattle represent the true sanga cattle of southern Africa, maintained by the Bantu people on the coast. The Nguni people represent a south-eastern Bantu. The cattle descended from the original sanga that were introduced into southern Africa when the Khoikhoi (Hottentots) and their sanga cattle first crossed the Zambezi river about 700 AD. Several waves of the Bantu people with various strains of sanga cattle entered the region and settled. Tribal migration and cattle raids continued until recently; consequently the different breeds of sanga today are related. Nguni cattle in Mozambique are known as Landim (meaning landrace in Portuguese).
