Coarse Wool Sheep
Special Characteristics:
NA
Main Location:
Found in Orange Free State, South Africa.
Origin:
This breed was developed between 1918 and 1920 in the south of the Orange Free State by backcrossing the progeny of Blackhead Persian ewes and brown woolled Persian rams (imported from Persia about 1915) to other similar (but white) rams. Further selection resulted in a hardy, fat-tailed, quick-growing sheep, giving a heavy carcass. The breed is called Africander because of the superficial resemblance of the Ronderib, but no racial connection is involved (Mason and Maule, 1960).
