Special Characteristics: 
Relatively small in size (60–67 cm height and 27–35 kg weight); polled animals are rare; horns curve outward and backwards in males, and are lighter and scimitar shaped in females; ears are short to medium in length, pricked forward and upward; toggles are present (14%); most males and some females are bearded; a mane along the whole length of the spine is almost universal in males; coat colour is variable, but whole blacks are common; the coat hair is fine and short but very few males have long hair on the hind legs (Wilson, 1991).
Main Location: 
Found in Rwanda, Burundi, Kivu province of Zaire (DR Congo) and in parts of southern Uganda as well as the extreme west of Tanzania; the climate in these east-central African highlands is sub humid with bimodal rainfall of 800 to 1500 mm per annum; the production systems are agro-pastoral and agricultural (Wilson, 1991).
