Synonyms:
Ugogo Zebu
Subgroup:
Tanganyika Zebu
Special Characteristics:
Well adapted to harsh environments, selective grazers with ability to browse discriminately during the dry season.
Main Location:
Found in western Tanzania.
Origin:
The Small East African Zebu are believed to have descended from the recent introductions of zebu into Africa from Asia, and some may have ancestral linkages with cattle of the Large East African Zebu group. The breeds or strains that belong to Tanganyika Zebu have broad genetic and phenotypic diversity, and are dispersed throughout mainland Tanzania, but mainly in the Dodoma area of central Tanzania. They are named after tribal groups or locations. The Ugogo Grey is the most distinctive of these breeds in its smaller body size, browser attributes and its adaptation to harsh environments (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
