Development of this breed was initiated in 1951, based on related crossbreeding work started in 1946. The target was an improved beef breed suitable for the conditions of Madagascar. The Renitelo (literally means 3 months) was constituted out of 50% Limousin, 25% Africander and 25% Madagascar Zebu. Although the breed was recognized in 1965, it was not registered. Until 1992 when the government took steps to revitalise work on the breed, interest on the Renitelo remained muted.
