Tanzanian group (along with the Tanganyika Zebu)
Special Characteristics: 
Generally smaller in body size than cattle on the mainland; short body, legs and horns; the hump is large and often overhanging in the bull; coat colour is mainly light red, dun, black, or grey (Felius, 1995).
Main Location: 
Found on the islands of Pemba and Zanzibar, but fewer on the latter because of the presence of tsetse fly.
Origin: 
The Zanzibar Zebu is thought to have originated from repeated introductions of Indian cattle and cattle from Burawa area on the Somali coast into Zanzibar and Pemba. Some zebu cattle were also introduced recently from the mainland Tanzania. Most of these are concentrated in Pemba because of the presence of tsetse fly in Zanzibar (Rege and Tawah, 1999).
