The breed is well adapted to extremely hot and humid conditions. It has a sleek, shining black coat.
Found in eastern parts of Orange Free State and Transvaal and north-western part of Natal in South Africa and in Swaziland.
Three local crossbred herds constituted the foundation stock. Unknown proportions of the Africander, Basuto, Zulu and Friesian cattle were involved in the breed development. The breed is good for beef and traction. Some are also milked. Breed improvement programme exists in South Africa. The breed was registered in 1972.
